Being a trustee for Pride in Gloucestershire is more than a title—it’s a commitment, a calling, and sometimes, a roller coaster of emotions. Since joining the team in 2022, I’ve been privileged to serve as the Event Director and one of the three champions working to bring EuroPride 2027 to our deserving community. If you’re curious about what it’s like to stand behind the scenes of Pride, here’s a peek into my world…
Having a Seat at the Table: What it Means to Be a Trustee
A trustee role involves more than just attending meetings; it’s about guiding the organisation’s vision. Pride in Gloucestershire champions inclusivity and community spirit, and as trustees, we ensure these values shine in every event and initiative.
My role combines strategic oversight with hands-on event planning, pushing the boundaries of what local Pride events can achieve. It’s a job that calls for creativity, persistence, and a genuine commitment to the LGBTQ+ community – but is supported by a great team of people.
If you’re considering becoming a trustee, be prepared to immerse yourself in a world of passionate advocacy, impactful decision-making, and a unique brand of community leadership.
The Event Planning: It’s More Than Just a Parade
As Event Director, I oversee the planning and production of several pride events annually. It’s not just about coordinating a parade or a festival; each event is an opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate diversity, and foster unity. Our team oversee lots of different aspects, from managing budgets and coordinating volunteers to liaising with performers and city officials, every detail is a puzzle piece in our broader mission. Pride events here are truly about “Pride with a Purpose,” an ethos that shapes each gathering into a vibrant, safe space for all and showcasing that to our communities.
Pride is a protest. Pride is a celebration. Pride is a way to change the world.
Bringing EuroPride 2027 to Gloucestershire: Dreaming Big, Working Hard
Our EuroPride bid is a high-stakes, exhilarating challenge, and it’s all about putting Gloucestershire on the map for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. Alongside my fellow trustees, Richard Stevens and Sean Bully, I’m part of a dedicated team presenting our vision to the European Pride Organisers Association on November 2nd. EuroPride could bring thousands from across Europe to Gloucestershire, creating an unforgettable experience that spotlights inclusivity, unity, and hope. The excitement is palpable, as is the pressure to deliver a stellar proposal.
Bringing a large-scale event like EuroPride to life requires tireless coordination, a rock-solid business plan, and an understanding of the social and political landscape – and I believe we’ve ticked all of those boxes – Keep Everything crossed for us!
The Challenges and Triumphs of Community Engagement
Engaging with a broad spectrum of people, each with unique needs and stories, is both a challenge and a triumph. We see community members who need support, allies who want to learn more, and volunteers who give their all. These connections remind me why this work matters.
Gloucestershire’s LGBTQ+ community spans diverse backgrounds, and our events reflect that richness. Whether it’s helping our Trans* social group or creating family-friendly (and not so family friendly) pride spaces, we work to ensure everyone feels seen, included, and celebrated.
LGBTQ+ mental health awareness is crucial, as studies show nearly half of LGBTQ+ youth feel a lack of community support. Events like Pride can be lifelines and I am proud to be part of that lifeline – with the feedback we receive our events truly make a difference.
Cringy But True: Building Lasting Friendships and Networks
The camaraderie within the trustee team and among the volunteers is one of the most rewarding aspects of this role. Pride events bring people together, and the bonds we form last long after the event is over. I’ve made lasting friendships, connected with inspiring activists, and worked with people from all walks of life who share a common purpose. This network of support makes every challenge feel a little lighter and every victory a shared celebration.
Volunteering in any capacity can open doors to new friendships and networks that may last a lifetime. These connections are invaluable for someone’s personal and professional growth.
Consider Becoming a Trustee?
This isn’t supposed to be a “sales post”, but charities are always in need of people that are willing to give some time to its cause. Pride in Gloucestershire are always on the look out for team members in all types of capacity – from Trustees to on the day volunteers. Our AGM is coming up in November and we are on the look out for any trustees that want to join us – ideally these trustees are professionals that have the time and inclination to add something to our organisation, roll up their sleeves and help us shape the future of Pride in Gloucestershire.
It’s a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself, to contribute your voice to a chorus that calls for equality and inclusion, and to stand for a cause that is as essential as it is empowering.
